To be honest, this client has gone through her own share of pressing health issues. Several years ago, when she had just undergone her final medical exam to get her “problem” knee fixed, she went in (she thought) for a preliminary check of vitals. They discovered her heart was not functioning as it should. Long story short, she postponed the knee surgery to have a malfunctioning valve replaced in her heart. Months later, after undergoing not one, but two surgeries to replace the misbehaving heart valve, she had progressed through post-rehab conditioning, and decided she really wanted to function better than just the “activities of daily living.” That’s when I got the call!
She had trained with me years before, and knew I would listen to her issues, not only with my ears, but also with my eyes, watching the ways she would walk, stand, move, sit…finding where she was compensating and actually using something else. Like all of us, her “human” body was not perfect, and to relieve pressure on the part that might be hurting, she was “giving in to it.” Although it made the stressed joint (usually her knees, hips, or back) feel better short-term, the giving in was really only making the problem worse!
At this point, we have been working again for several months. Her knee doctor is amazed at how much we have been able to straighten her legs, give them strength and more endurance, and often resulting in less pain. (She tells all of her doctors that we should be part of the REQUIRED post-rehab program.) Her biggest issues now come from building stamina, and helping both her breathing and heart keep regular and consistent..
Another of her biggest issues is still enough hydration and consistent movement of joints. Like everyone else, her biggest reason for not drinking more or moving more, is “I just don’t have enough time!” Without taking time to think too long, I said:
“You have the time to make yourself feel good…you just have to plan it!”
Don’t wait for extra time, you’ll never have it…YOU have to plan it! We can help, but YOU have to plan and participate!
